Egypt's famed soccer team Al-Ahly got a 2-0 home victory yesterday over
Coton Sport of Cameroon in the first leg of the African Champions League
final. At the Cairo International Stadium yesterday evening, Al-Ahly
dominated the match with the support of some 50,000 fans. The five-time
African champions claimed an easy win due to two early goals form defender Wael
Gomaa and Angolan striker Flavio Amado. Shortly after the victory, Al-Ahly
coach Manuel Jose praised the performance of the team, saying "We produced a
good performance today, although we wasted numerous chances." "The players
exerted magnificent efforts in the game," local football website Filgoal.com
quoted Jose as saying. The Cairo "Red Devils" won the titles of African
Champions League in 1982, 1987, 2001, 2005 and 2006. The second leg of the
final matches is scheduled for Nov. 16 in Garoua, Cameroon. The winners will be
honored with US$1 million in prize money. Much more important for Al-Ahly,
the Egyptian giants are seeking a record sixth title of the League. The
winners will also get a ticket to represent Africa to take part in this year's
FIFA Club World Cup in Japan.
