The match between Fluminense and Figueirense on October 30, which was
canceled after 15 minutes of play due to power failure, was
resumed yesterday.
The game picked up what was left. Under a heavy rain at the Orlando Scarpelli
stadium in Florianopolis, Fluminense hung on to their lead to win 1-0.
In October 30 game, Fluminense jumped ahead in the 12th minute when Arouca
scored. In yesterday's game, the team simply played a defensively minded game in
order to secure their victory on the road. The strong winds and rains did not
favor the aggressive team. Thus, Fluminense had the convenience of sitting back
and protecting their half of the field.
With their win, Fluminense now has 37 points and is currently out of serious
danger of being sent into the second division of the Brasileiro Championship for
the 2009 season.
However, Figueirense finds themselves in a tough position with 35 points. In
the 33rd round of play on Saturday, Figueirense will host Atletico-PR, a team
also struggling to remain in the first division with 35 points.
The team currently in dead last is Ipatinga, with 31 points.
Fluminense will travel to play one of the top teams in this year's
competition, Cruzeiro.
