Flamengo loses to Cruzeiro and drops to 5th place
24/11/2008 17:35

In a crucial game of the Brasileiro championship, the home team of Cruzeiro beat Flamengo 3-2 yesterday.
With the victory, Gremio assumes third place, dropping Flamengo to fifth. By doing so, Cruzeiro has qualified for the 2009 Libertadores Cup, removing Flamengo from the South American tournament.
The current leader board reads as follows: Sao Paulo remains atop with 71 points, followed by Gremio with 66 points and Cruzeiro with 64.
Palmeiras also has 64 points, but lied in fourth place due to a goal difference. Flamengo sits just out of reach of the 2009 Libertadores Cup in fifth place with 63 points. With only two rounds left in the 2008 Brasileiro Championship, every point is now a matter of life and death.
With the loss, Flamengo's hopes of winning this year's competition have dwindled. However, looking on the bright side of yesterday's loss, the team's injured goalkeeper Bruno said, "The team never gave up. They deserve a round of applause for their efforts. Our goal was to be champions of the Brasileiro."
"However, this appears to be impossible now. Our next goal is to be able to secure our presence in the 2009 Libertadores," Bruno added.
