Sao Paulo beats Vasco, two games from title

Sao Paulo took one more step in securing their sixth title as they beat Vasco 2-1 in the the 38th round in the Brazilian Championship yesterday.
Sao Paulo now have 71 points with two round remaining.
Sao Paulo were also comforted by title rivals Gremio's 4-2 loss to Vitoria, thus distancing themselves from the pack. After yesterday's win, Sao Paulo secured their qualification in the 2009 Libertadores Cup.
Sao Paulo's closest challenger, Gremio, slipped yesterday, giving Sao Paulo a larger lead. In fact, Sao Paulo's team directory offered a bonus of US$80,000 to Vitoria should they beat Gremio. Now, Sao Paulo will have to make good on the offer.
In next weekend's matches, Sao Paulo will need to beat Fluminense in order to guarantee yet another title. However, a tie will still lead to a Sao Paulo title if Gremio were to lose to Ipatinga next yesterday.
Should Sao Paulo fall to Fluminense, the team will have one more chance to win, leading to their championship trophy.
Sao Paulo will play Goias in the last round of play in this year's Brasileiro Championship.
According to the team's head coach, Muricy Ramalho we need to keep our feet on the ground. The trophy has not yet been decided. We have a tough match next week against Fluminense. If we play well, we will win, leading to a well deserved title.
