Brazilian referee banned for error against Flamengo

The Brazilian Referee Commission decided yesterday to ban Eugenio Simon
for one game due to an obvious judging error in a Brazilian Championship
match. Commision president of Sergio Correa said Simon failed to award
Flamengo a justified penalty before they lost to Cruzeiro 3-2 last Sunday. On
Monday, Flamengo vice president Kleber Leite filed an official letter of
compliant to the Brazilian Referee Commission, describing Simon's performance as
"eccentric". Leite also promised to send the world soccer governing body FIFA
a video illustrating the blown call, claiming that his motives behind the
complaints are to keep the referee out of the 2010 World Cup so that such
obvious and serious calls are not missed. Flamengo's loss to Cruzeiro wiped
out any hopes of the team winning this year's title. With 63 points and only
two games left in the championship, Flamengo is too far behind leader Sao Paulo,
who garners 71 points. Flamengo now stands fifth, out of the qualification
zone to play in the 2009 Libertadores Cup. Gremio is in second on 66 and has
a very slim chance of overtaking Sao Paulo. Cruzeiro and Palmeiras are tied
for 64 points, with the former ranking third on more victories.
