Shanghai Shenhua striker Mao Jianqing has been excluded from the Chinese
national team for his part in a restaurant attack last weekend, sources at the
Chinese Football Association (CFA) said. "We have to make sure he will not
appear in the new training camp, a player with such bad conduct does not deserve
the honor of the national team," a CFA official told Xinhua on condition of
anonymity. "Mao is a quality player, but he brought disgrace to Chinese
football. The national team is not a place for thugs," he added. Mao and
Shenhua team mate Liu Yintao went with friends to a restaurant in early Monday
morning after missing out on the Chinese Super League (CSL) title at the
weekend. A man surnamed Xu, who was then dining at the restaurant, greeted a
woman accompanying the players and was beaten up. The Chinese team will start
their training camp next Wednesday with a new coach expected to be unveiled in a
few days.
