First Asian Open Compound tournament kicks off in Myanmar

The First Asian Open Compound tournament kicked off at the Kyaikkasan
Archery Ground in Yangon today with the participation of half a dozen
countries. A total of 27 archers, 18 men and nine women, from six countries
-- China, India, Malaysia, host Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand, are taking part
in the first Asian Open Compound tournament, which is a world ranking event,
scheduled on Dec. 11-13. Myanmar archery team will appear in the tournament
with the most players of ten, six men -- Ye Min Swe, Phyo Bo Bo Tint San, Paing
Myat Thu, Khin Zaw, Khin Maung Win and Paing Pyae Phyo, and four women -- Aung
Hngein, Khin Lay Nu, Hla Hla San and Tin Hla Win, while Indian team with nine,
six men and three women, Thai team with three men, Chinese team with one man and
woman each and Malaysian team with two men. A total of 18 medals -- six
golds, silvers and bronzes each -- will be awarded in six events of men's and
women's 70-meter ranking round, individual and team, in the three-day
tournament. It will be the fifth international archery tournament which
Myanmar hosted since 1998. Myanmar hosted the Asian Roundup Archery
Championships in 1998, the 13th Asian Archery Championship and the Athen
Olympics Archery Qualifying tournament in 2003, the first Southeast Asian (SEA)
Archery Championship and Asian Archery Grand Prix (2005) in 2005, the second SEA
Archery Championship and third Asian Archery Grand Prix (2006) in 2006. The
MAF, which was founded in 1995, has entered about 40 international competitions
since then. The MAF grabbed 142 medals -- 44 gold, 48 silver and 50 bronze --
from the 24 international competitions including Asian Games, Southeast Asian
(SEA) Games, Asian Archery Grand Prix, SEA Championships and Invitational
Tournaments.
