Spain's top court, the National Hearing, will sentence 27 defendants being
tried for the 2004 Madrid train bombing by Oct. 31, a court spokesman said
yesterday. The nine Spanish citizens, 15 Moroccans, one Algerian, one
Egyptian and one Lebanese will face jail terms of between four and 38,952
years. The main part of the court proceedings running from Feb. 15 to July 2
found Rabei Osman El Sayed, Hassan El Haski and Youssef Belhadj guilty of
masterminding the attack, and Jamal Zougam and Abdelmajid Bouchar of carrying
out their plan. Tribunal head Javier Gomez Bermudez will read the sentence to
the court on Oct. 31, accompanied by colleagues Alfonso Guevara and Fernando
Garcia Nicolas. The train bombing on March 11, 2004, in Madrid is Spain's
most serious terrorist attack, in which 191 people were killed and more than
2,000 hurt. Spain's Interior Ministry said that the attackers were linked to
Al-Qaeda terrorist group. Seven people suspected of carrying out the attack
used a bomb to commit suicide when they were besieged by security forces in
Leganes, on the outskirts of Madrid, a few days after the
attack.
