Four workers were killed and hundreds of others were feared to be trapped
when a nine-story building housing the textile mill collapsed earlier on Monday
in Bangladesh. Fire Brigade officials here said the building collapsed
following a boiler explosion of the factory, and confirmed four bodies have been
pulled out from the collapsed building in Savar area, 25 km west of capital
Dhaka. Fire officials when contacted by phone told Xinhua they have rescued
over 40 workers and sent the survivors to hospitals for treatment. The exact
number of workers still trapped inside the debris, however, is not available.
Some survivors estimated at least 500 workers were trapped within the collapsed
building, while a fire official believed there were some 1,000 workers locked
inside the textile factory. A private television's footage showed some
workers trapped inside the building could be heard crying and seeking help,
while rescue workers were seen talking with them. Army men were also called
from the Savar cantonment and joined the rescue operation. Source from fire
brigade pointed out it was totally unwise to construct such a big building in a
place with very limited space. The fire brigade have no proper equipment to
work in such a difficult situation, then it may take two or three days to
complete the rescue work, he said.
