Unknown gunmen opened fire at a high-ranking police officer in southern
Baghdad on Thursday, killing a civilian and wounding the officer and five other
people, an Interior Ministry source told Xinhua. "Armed men opened fire at
the convoy of Col. Hussein Abdul Wahid, in command of police in Rasafa area, the
eastern part of Baghdad, in the capital's al-Baya'a district as he was heading
to work," the source said on condition of anonymity. Abdul Wahid was
seriously wounded in his neck, and two of his bodyguards were also injured, the
source said. The bodyguards traded fire with the gunmen and one civilian
passenger was killed and three others wounded in the cross fire, he
added. Separately, a roadside bomb went off at about 7:40 a.m. (0440 GMT) on
the highway in Doura district in southern Baghdad, damaging a civilian car and
wounding the driver, the source said. Gunmen frequently target Iraqi security
personnel in a bid to topple the current Iraqi government installed in late
April.
