A snowstorm in Mendoza province, on the western Argentina border with
Chile, closed yesterdaya tunnel close to the border, trapping 2,000 trucks,
Argentina's National Guard said. The storm brought fierce winds, drove
temperatures down to between -20 and -9 degrees Celsius and brought snow up to
50 cm deep. Another cold front, which is bringing freezing air from the South
Pole, is expected in the region within a few hours, the police said. The
trapped vehicles are in the Cristo Redentor area, near the tunnel entrance.
Vehicles cannot travel any further than the settlement of Puente del
