Unidentified gunmen ambushed five trucks travelling near Iraq's restive
western city of Fallujah on Friday morning, killing the five drivers, a local
police source said. The trucks were travelling on the highway west of
Fallujah at around 8:00 a.m. (0400 GMT) when gunmen stopped the vehicles, pulled
out the drivers and riddled them with bullets before setting the trucks on fire,
the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity. The motive of the attack
was not clear and the police were investigating the incident, he added. In a
separate incident, three Iraqi policemen were wounded when four mortar rounds
landed at about 7:00 a.m. (0300 GMT) on a police station of Ameriyat al-Fallujah
town, 7 km south of Fallujah, the source said. Meanwhile, the Iraqi police
found three unidentified bodies near the cemetery of Khaldiyah town, some 80 km
west of Baghdad, he said. The bodies showed signs of torture with bullets in
the head and chest, he added. The volatile Anbar province, which includes
Fallujah and Ramadi has frequently witnessed insurgent attacks targeting the US
and Iraqi governmental forces.
