US blasts Syria in counter-terror report

The White House blasted Syria in its "National Strategy for Combating
Terrorism" released yesterday for allegedly sponsoring terrorism. "Syria also
is a significant state sponsor of terrorism and thus a priority for concern,"
the report said. "The regime in Damascus supports and provides haven to
Hezbollah, Hamas, and PIJ (Palestine Islamic Jihad). We will continue to stand
with the people of Iran and Syria against the regimes that oppress them at home
and sponsor terror abroad," the report said. Syria has been on the US list of
"state sponsors of terrorism " and the United States has accused Syria of
supporting insurgents in Iraq and financing the Lebanese Hezbollah, a group
branded by the United States as a terrorist organization.
