US slammed for "biased position" to Palestinian coalition government deal
14/9/2006 16:10
Senior Palestinian officials condemned yesterday the United States for its
stance regarding the new Palestinian deal to form a national-unity
government. The officials made the denunciation in response to the remarks
made earlier by a spokesman of the US State Department, who said the coalition
Palestinian government didn't meet the international community's demands of
renouncing violence, recognizing Israel and previous peace deals. Atef Adwan,
a minister of the Islamic Resistance Movement ( Hamas)-led Palestinian cabinet
denounced that "this is a biased position and it wants to impose political
conditions on the Palestinian people and their leaders." Meanwhile,
Palestinian lawmaker Hanan Ashrawi, who is likely to be the next foreign
minister, also asked Washington not to "issue hasty judgments regarding the
national-unity government". "The government didn't yet form, and its
political program is not published," Ashrawi said, adding that the aim of
forming the coalition "was not to satisfy America or any else". Ashrawi
called on the world to "deal positively with the Palestinian steps", saying the
new government has to make "an international political
breakthrough".
