Singapore launches new program to facilitate biomed industries
27/11/2006 16:47

Singapore today launched new Good Lab Practice (GLP) program to facilitate growth of biomedical companies and local laboratories.
According to Standards, Productivity and Innovation Board ( SPRING Singapore), companies in US$the billion biomedical industry and local labs can now apply for registration.
The GLP is a quality system that reviews a research facility's process and conditions in which its non-clinical studies are planned, performed, monitored, recorded, reported and archived, the SPRING Singapore said.
Companies which are GLP-compliant will have their non-clinical studies data accepted in 30 Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries, removing the need for expensive retests, and trimming the time-to-market for new products, the SPRING Singapore said.
"It will speed up the time-to-market for products discovered in Singapore and help strengthen our capabilities in transnational research," said Yeoh Keat Chuan, director of Biomedical Sciences Group, Economic Development Board (EDB).
The new program, which is supported by the SPRING Singapore and other four government agencies, will benefit research labs in the pharmaceutical, pesticide, veterinary drug products and industrial chemicals industries.
Singapore dedicates to boost the biomedical sciences and chemicals industries. The biomedical sciences sector is set to grow to 25 billion Singapore dollars (about US$16 billion) by 2015, while the chemicals industries will be worth 75 billion Singapore dollars (about US$48 billion) by 2018.
