Japanese ship collides with US sub in Arabian Sea

A Japanese commercial ship collided with a US nuclear-powered submarine in
the Persian Gulf early today (Japan Time), injuring no one, Kyodo News reported
today. The 299,999-ton large tanker Mogamigawa operated by Kawasaki Kisen
Kaisha Ltd collided with the 6,300-ton attack submarine Newport News under the
command of the US Navy's 5th Fleet headquartered in Bahrain at around 4:15 a.m.
near the Strait of Hormuz, Japanese foreign ministry sources were quoted as
saying. The Japanese Foreign Ministry received the report early in the
morning. The sub's bow and the tanker's stern may have collided, however,
both vessels did not develop oil or radiation leak after the collision, Kyodo
said.
