Sudan and the United Nations affirmed yesterday the importance to
politically resolve the Darfur crisis and the efforts exerted by all parties
concerned to achieve peace in the war-torn region. The assertion came during
a meeting between Sudanese Foreign Minister Lam Akol and Jan Eliasson, UN
Secretary General Ban Ki- Moon's special envoy to Sudan, the official Sudanese
SUNA news agency reported. The two sides affirmed during their talks the
importance to cease hostilities to create conducive atmosphere for the political
dialogue in the region, the report said. Akol expressed his confidence in the
ability of Eliasson to realize the aspired solution in the framework of the
terms of reference of his work, which was based on the understandings reached
between the Sudanese government, the UN and the African Union (AU) on the
support to be provided by the UN to the AU peacekeeping force in Darfur. The
UN envoy, on his part, reiterated his commitment to a full transparency and the
spirit of cooperation between the AU, the UN and the Sudanese government in
performing his mission for achieving a peaceful political solution for the
Darfur issue and respecting Sudan's sovereignty and territorial
integrity. Eliasson described his talks with Akol as positive and fruitful,
adding that he would continue contacts with Sudanese officials and other parties
in the context of his mission for resolving the Darfur issue. The UN envoy
arrived in Khartoum on Tuesday on his first visit in Sudan since he was
appointed to the present post on Dec. 19 last year.
