Hamas rejects accusation by al-Qaida's Zawahri

A senior leader of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) yesterday rejected the accusations by al-Qaida's No. two Ayman al-Zawahri over signing a power-sharing deal with moderate President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement.

"Our brother al-Zawahri made many mistakes... Hamas did not give up Palestine and when we signed Mecca deal we were aiming at saving the Palestinian blood," Khalil Abu Laila told reporters in Gaza.

In a video tape broadcasted Sunday on the Qatar-based al-Jazeera channel, Zawahri said Hamas has given Palestine for the Jews in order to remain in office.

He also attacked Saudi Arabia, which host Hamas-Fatah talks last month, and accused the Saudis of being America's deputies in the Middle East.

"Hamas has been in office since a year but maintained the Palestinian principles," said Abu Laila.

Hamas agreed to enter in coalition with Fatah and a unity government headed by Hamas is likely to be announced this week, according to media reports.

Abu Laila further noted that Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has repeatedly said he will not deal with members of the unity government and this is proves that Hamas succeeded to draw the factions to its agenda that support resistance.

Concerning Abbas-Olmert meeting that took place Sunday evening in Jerusalem, Abu Laila considered it a failed one that brought no results.

"Olmert tries to deceive the world that a good progress is madeon the Palestinian cause... but this is a naked game," Abu Laila said.
