Poles paid tribute to Jewish heroes yesterday during the 64th anniversary
of the Ghetto uprising in Warsaw. Polish President Lech Kaczynski laid a
wreath under Warsaw's Ghetto Heroes Memorial. Also present on the occasion
included Foreign Minister Anna Fotyga, Warsaw Mayor Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz and
Israeli embassy officials. Poland's head Rabbi Michael Schudrich called the
uprising "a choice between death and death." "The insurgents wanted to at least
choose how to die. They decided to fight to the end," Schudrich said. On the
same day, the ceremonies to commemorate revolt victim's and some other
activities were also held in Warsaw martyr's grave and the Jew tomb. The
ghetto uprising broke out on April 19, 1943 as a desperate attempt to hinder the
ghetto's liquidation. After the rising failed, a lot of Jews died in the
fighting and the Germans leveled the ghetto, sending most of its survivors to
concentration camps.
