The US House of Representatives yesterday passed a 646 billion-US-dollar
defense bill that would fund the Defense Department for the next fiscal year
starting Oct. 1. The bill, which was adopted in a vote of 397-27, would
authorize more than US$100 billion in military procurement and US$142 billion
for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The House also adopted an amendment to
the bill that requires the Bush administration to develop a plan to transfer
detainees from the US military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The White House,
however, said it would veto any bill that prevents the detention of enemy
combatants. The Senate Armed Services Committee was expected to complete its
version of the legislation next week.
