Tidal waves kill one, destroy hundreds houses in Indonesia

One person was killed and hundreds houses were destroyed by 2-3-meter-high waves in Indonesia West Sumatra province yesterday, Disaster Management agency said.

The tidal waves also caused panic resident living in coastal areas of the province and in the provinces of West Java and Yogyakarta, said an official of the agency Firman Khairul.

One was killed and hundreds houses seriously damaged in West Sumatra, he told Xinhua.

In West Sumatra province, the west coast, followed by Padang city, the regencies of Padang, Agam and Pasaman, were the most destructive areas.

The report Xinhua has got so far said that in west coast of the province 88 houses were destroyed, 80 in Padang regency, 44 in Agam and 4 in Pasaman.

The waves destroyed the areas in minutes, said Khairul.

Television footage of Metro TV showed that people were panic leaving their inundated residence the coastal areas and carrying their belonging.

Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said that the waves was triggered by an accumulation of the gusts of winds in Indonesian Ocean.

The accumulation of the gust of winds in Indonesian Ocean caused swell in west coast of Sumatra and West coast of Java island, the head of public information section of weather unit of the agency Putu Eka told Xinhua.
