Thousands of people headed to Central Park, Manhattan on yesterday morning
to join the 22nd annual AIDS Walk New York. The 6.2-mile (about 10-km) walk
has raised more than US$90 million since 1986 and benefits Gay Men's Health
Crisis and other organizations. The promotional campaign for the 2007 AIDS
Walk New York was unveiled on Thursday. Tens of thousands of posters, street
banners, print and online ads could be noticed in the five boroughs of the city
in the weeks leading up to the May 20 AIDS Walk in Central Park. AIDS Walk
Founder, Craig R. Miller, stated "It's important to remind the public that there
is still an urgent need for each of us to take direct action to fight the apathy
and complacency that too much surrounds the US AIDS epidemic." AIDS Walk New
York Event Director, Leif Green, who along with Miller was instrumental in
developing the new campaign said he was striving to show "how the strength and
perseverance of one individual can capture the essence of an entire
movement." "We created six different pieces that represent a diverse spectrum
of people affected by the AIDS crisis," said Green. "Our figures include a gay
Latino male, an African-American female professional, a heterosexual college
student, a young mother and her child, a gay couple, and an Asian-American
grandparent." Organizers said the campaign for the 2007 AIDS Walk New York "
demands as much attention as is needed for the cause it supports." Last year,
nearly 47,000 participants raised a record US$6.7 million, making AIDS Walk New
York the largest AIDS fundraiser in the country.
