5/7/2007 16:06

Construction of a 600-mw coal-fired power plant with an investment of US$625 million has started in Vietnam's northern Hai Phong City, local newspaper Vietnam Economic Times reported today.
The two-turbine plant named Hai Phong 2 is scheduled to annually generate 3.6 billion kwh of electricity after it becomes operational in 2010. Its investor is the state-owned power group Vietnam Electricity (EVN).
The construction of a similar thermoelectric plant with the same capacity, Hai Phong 1, is undergoing in the city.
Vietnam's electricity demand is estimated to annually grow 10- 15 percent in the 2007-2010 period, so the country needs US$20 billion from now to 2010 to implement electricity production, transmission and distribution projects, according to the EVN, the country's biggest electricity producer and sole distributor.
Vietnam plans to increase its electricity capacity to 25,000-26, 000 MW in 2010 from 11,400 MW in 2005, meeting demand for its socio-economic development, said the EVN.
