Dialogue only way out of Palestine situation - Mubarak
1/8/2007 16:23
Dialogue is the only way out of the current situation in Palestine,
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak said yesterday. Mubarak made the remarks
during his meeting with newly appointed Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad
at the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, the Egyptian official news agency MENA
quoted Egyptian presidential spokesman Suleiman Awwad as saying. The latest
developments in the Palestinian territories figured high in the meeting, Awwad
said. Mubarak's meeting with Fayyad reflects Egypt's supportive stance toward
Palestinian legitimacy, Palestinian Ambassador in Egypt Munzer al-Dajani said in
a statement to MENA. The Palestinian armed resistance against the Israeli
occupation "is legitimate," Fayyad said in a statement, adding, "We are occupied
by Israel and resisting the occupation is a legitimate right ... there is no
argument in this fact." The Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas)
has lashed out at Fayyad's political platform for not containing expressions
urging armed conflict and resistance against the Israeli occupation. Asked
about the possibility of holding early elections in the Palestinian territories,
Fayyad said, "All what we are trying to do is to settle the internal Palestinian
situation." "The aim of holding elections is to unite the Palestinian
territories. Now we are having an abnormal situation after all what happened in
Gaza, and the elections would end such a situation there," said
Fayyad. Fayyad who arrived here Sunday to attend an Arab foreign ministers
extraordinary meeting at the Arab League headquarters left Egypt last night
heading for Jordan on his way back to Ramallah.
