UN border team visits Lebanon: statement
18/7/2008 17:42
The Lebanese Independent Border Team (LIBAT), dispatched by UN Secretary
General Ban Ki-moon, arrived yesterday in Lebanon for second visit, a statement
by the UN information center said. The team will conduct a checkup on
Lebanon's ongoing efforts to enhance border management capacity following
recommendations by LIBAT during its first visit to Lebanon in 2007, the
statement added. The team includes four experts with military, police and
customs experience. LIBAT team will carry out "consultations with Lebanese
officials as well as other partners already assisting Lebanon in this area" for
two weeks, and will present a report to UN secretary general at the end of their
mission, the statement said. Lebanese borders have been subject to criticism
from international and local parties for being loose, leading to the smuggling
of weapons and illegal entry of Islamic militants into the
country.
