Cambodia asks Security Council to delay meeting on border dispute

Cambodia yesterday asked the UN Security Council to postpone a meeting it
has requested to discuss its border dispute with neighboring
Thailand. Vietnam's UN Ambassador Le Luong Minh, the council's president for
this month, told reporters that he received a letter from Cambodia's UN mission
asking him to postpone the meeting "pending the result of the meeting between
the two foreign ministers." "Prime Minister Hun Sen of Cambodia has agreed
with Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej of Thailand that there will be a meeting
between the foreign ministers on July 28 to find a peaceful solution to the
situation," Le said, quoting the letter. Earlier this week, the Cambodian
government requested an emergency meeting of the 15-member body to help resolve
a military standoff over disputed border territory near World Heritage Site the
Preah Vihear Temple. The dispute over 1.8 square miles of land near the
temple escalated earlier this month when UNESCO approved Cambodia's application
to have the complex named a World Heritage Site. More than 4,000 troops have
been deployed around the temple and in the immediate vicinity since July
15.
