Lebanon, Syria to establish diplomatic ties: Suleiman

Lebanese President Michel Suleiman said that decrees in Beirut and
Damascus would be issued on Thursday to formally establish diplomatic ties
between Lebanon and Syria, local Daily Star reported today. Meanwhile,
Lebanese Foreign Minister Fawzi Salloukh said yesterday that establishing
diplomatic relations between Beirut and Damascus requires a decision by the
Syrian Parliament. "Such a decision will be followed by some logistic
measures which need to be taken by both countries in order to put the agreement
into effect," Salloukh said. Syria and Lebanon agreed on Wednesday to open
diplomatic relations at ambassadorial level during a summit between the
presidents of the two countries last week. On Friday, the Lebanese president
briefed the cabinet on the outcomes of his visit to Syria. The two countries
also agreed to negotiate the demarcation of their boarders, a long time demand
by Lebanon and the West. A thorny issue awaits the two countries, that of the
fate of Lebanese prisoners in Syrian jails.
