Bush: US still "at war" with extremists

US President George W. Bush warned yesterday that the country is still "at
war" with ideological extremists after terrorist attacks at the US embassy in
Yemen. "This attack is a reminder that we are at war with extremists who will
murder innocent people to achieve their ideological objectives," Bush told
reporters at the White House. "One objective of these extremists is to kill,
to try to cause the United States to lose our nerve and to withdraw from regions
of the world." The president made the remarks as a response to the suicide
car bomb attacks on the US embassy earlier the day in the capital of Yemen,
leaving 16 people killed, including six assailants. According to the US
government, the attacks were a failed attempt to breach the embassy compound's
walls. US State Department spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters that the
assault bears "all the hallmarks of an al-Qaida attack." "There's an ongoing
issue with al-Qaida and ... violent extremists and terrorism in Yemen," he said
at a press conference. A radical group calling itself the Islamic Jihad in
Yemen claimed responsibility for the attack. Recent years have witnessed a
string of terror attacks by Islamic militants in Yemen where al-Qaida leader
Osama bin Laden was reportedly born.
