Brazilian president to defend biofuels at UN General Assembly

Brazilian President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva will defend the country's
biofuel production at the upcoming 63rd UN General Assembly, his spokesmen
Marcelo Baumbach announced yesterday.
At the UN gathering, which started on
Sept. 16 at the UN headquarters in New York, Lula will stress that biofuels
should not be blamed for the international food crisis and reaffirm the
country's commitment to developing biofuels despite the recent discovery of huge
oil resources, Baumbach said.
The president will also reiterate Brazil's bid
for a permanent seat at the UN Security Council, said the spokesman.
Lula
will also call for more resources and actions to fight poverty and hunger, in
particular a concentrated effort to increase food production in less-developed
countries and eliminate subsidies that developed nations give to their
farmers.
Baumbach added that the international financial crisis is not
expected to be addressed at any specific meetings, but might be informally
discussed at presidents' bilateral meetings.
