Venezuelan Interior and Justice Minister Tarek El Aissami confirmed yesterday the seizure of another cannon, a model AT4, besides the one captured on Wednesday for an attempted assassination and coup against the government of President Hugo Chaves.
El Aissami indicated that the AT4 cannon was discovered in the district of Mariperez de Caracas in the northwest of the Venezuelan capital.
"Today, the Metropolitan Police achieved goal of disarming part of this killing plan. Media try to hide the severity of the plan," El Aissami said during an honoring event to the police corps of the metropolitan area.
Earlier yesterday, Venezuelan deputy Earle Herrera said that they had seized the high impact weapon, allegedly to be used in a frustrated coup against the government, on Sept. 11.
According to officials, the country's political opposition, made up by retired soldiers and businessmen, were trying to kill President Hugo Chavez.
The National Assembly and General Prosecutor Office of the Republic are investigating the case.
On Wednesday Venezuelan state security officers also seized a portable cannon in the Zulia State in northwest Venezuela, allegedly to be used to blow up the president's plane. They also arrested two men and seized four grenades.
