Seven aides to Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential candidate
Sarah Palin agreed yesterday to testify in the State Legislature's ongoing probe
into her alleged abuse of power. The aides included Palin's chief of staff
and six other aides, who are among the 12 people subpoenaed by the state Senate
last month to testify on whether Palin's firing of the state's former public
safety commissioner Walt Monegan is motivated by revenge. Monegan alleged
that he lost his job because he was unwilling to fire Mike Wooten, a state
trooper who divorced Palin's younger sister. The state Senate launched an
investigation in July and will receive a final report from investigators by
Friday. Todd Palin, Palin's husband, was also subpoenaed to testify on the
issue, but it was not clear whether he would provide testimony. The
investigation started even before Palin was chosen by Republican presidential
candidate John McCain to be his running mate on Aug. 29, which raised doubts
about McCain's background checking of his running mate. It is still unclear
how the investigation will affect the presidential race.
