Brazilian president hails local elections as democratic lesson

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said yesterday that his
country gave a democratic lesson to the world with the municipal
elections. "The election day was calm and there was a large number of
electors, a wide variety of candidates and a fast voting process with electronic
vote boxes," Lula said during his weekly radio program "Breakfast with the
President." There are 130 million registered voters in Brazil and "options
for all the likings," because the contenders represent 27 parties, Lula
said. Lula said the elections without major incidents showed the maturity of
the institutions and strength of the democracy in Brazil. Brazilians pick out
authorities and legislators for 5,563 municipalities in the Sunday's
elections. The ruling Party of the Workers (PT), led by president Lula,
elected 546 mayors in the first round of elections. "The authorities who ran
good management received the recognition from the people," he said, adding "the
normality and tranquility were extremely important during the voting." Lula
also said "the citizens must participate in the elections of their cities
because they are the ones who will chose who is going to take care of their
street, district or school."
