The Thai capital appeared calm under gloomy sky this morning following
yesterday's clashes between anti-government protesters and police in the city
center, while the injury toll from the riots have risen to 437. The
Narenthorn Emergency Centre under Thailand's Public Health Ministry reported
today that among the 437 injured, 73 of them remain in hospitals and the rest
were discharged after receiving treatments. By far, two persons died amid the
chaos yesterday, in which police fired tear gas a few times since early morning
into the crowds of protesters led by civilian anti-government coalition People's
Alliance for Democracy (PAD) in an attempt to disperse them, while the other
side returned attacks at the police with home-made weapons, at protest and clash
scenes-- mainly around the Parliament, the Government House and the Bangkok
Metropolitan Police Bureau. According to earlier reports, among the injured
were many PAD supporters, some journalists and policemen. Early this morning,
the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration have deployed more than 200 staff to
clean up the streets around the protest and clash sites, where chaos yesterday
left much garbage and exhausted groups of PAD supporters, with most having
retreated to the main rally site inside the Government House
compound.
