The US-led Coalition forces killed one militant and detained two more
suspects in two separate operations targeting the Haqqani and Al-Qaeda networks
in Afghanistan yesterday, said a Coalition statement released in Kabul
today. Coalition forces targeted a known Haqqani militant believed to be in
direct contact with senior Haqqani leaders and to coordinate and direct militant
activities in eastern Afghan province of Khost, the statement said. "Two
suspected militants were detained in the operation," it said. In the other
operation in central Afghan province of Ghazni, Coalition forces disrupted an
Al-Qaeda IED (Improvised Explosive Device) network in Andar district, said the
statement. "The targeted militant, known to coordinate and facilitate IED
attacks, was killed after displaying hostile intent toward the Coalition
forces," it said. One AK-47, multiple grenades, mortar fusesand IED-making
materials were discovered on the spot, it added. Moreover, one Coalition
service member, according to another Coalition statement, was killed in a
vehicle roll over in western Afghanistan today. It did not disclose any
further information about the name or nationality of the service member in light
of Coalition policy but saying "this incident is under
investigation." Conflicts and spiraling insurgency so far this year have
claimed the lives of over 4,000 people, mostly militants, while Taliban and
other anti-government outfits have intensified their activities targeting
interests of Afghan government and international troops.
