Russia supports the idea of holding an emergency meeting of the Group of
Eight (G8) industrialized nations amid the current global financial crisis,
President Dmitry Medvedev said yesterday.
"Such an urgent G8 meeting would be useful now. But the G8 should meet
together with other leading economies which impact the situation in the global
financial market," Medvedev told reporters in the Kyrgyz capital of Bishkek,
where he attended a CIS summit.
This meeting could be attended by China, India, Brazil, Mexico, South Africa
and "maybe, several more nations," he said, adding that the idea of inviting
other big countries "is already being shared not only in Europe."
"I heard certain statements made by U.S. officials who believe this is a
right thing to do," he added.
The Russian president said consultations on the issue are underway, but no
venue or time has been determined yet.
Meanwhile, Medvedev said measures taken by the government to support Russia's
financial sector "are sufficient and serious" so far.
"We will keep a close eye on the situation and I plan to convene a meeting to
discuss the financial support for certain sectors of Russia's economy. We should
do our utmost to keep our achievements," he said.
