Venezuelan president accuses opposition of engineering crisis
13/10/2008 17:15

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez yesterday accused the opposition of engineering a political crisis in the country for next year in a renewed attempt to overthrow him.
The opposition was preparing subversive plans together with "the paramilitaries in Colombia, the extreme fascist right of Venezuela and the US imperialist government," Chavez said at events marking the Discovery of America, which is now celebrated in Venezuela as the Day of the Indigenous Resistance.
Some observers saw Chavez' remarks as part of a political strategy to win over more voters for his party in the local elections scheduled for Nov. 23.
Chavez accused opposition leader Manuel Rosales, a candidate for the mayoralty of Maracaibo, the second-largest city of Venezuela, of making coups and subversive plans.
