Newly appointed Pacific Islands Forum Secretary General Tuiloma Neroni
Slade today welcomed Fiji's interim government decision to re-engage with the
Forum's Joint Working Group on Fiji. Slade made the comments in his first
press conference on his first week at the Suva-based Secretariat, the Pacnews
reported today. "The interim government has notified its willingness to re-
engage in the Forum Joint Working Group and to accept further the Forum foreign
ministers' ministerial contact group. "From the Secretariat this is a very
welcome development and it is in line with the conclusion of the Forum leaders
summit and their desire as expressed in the Niue Communique that this engagement
should resume," Slade said. "I believe it's a most useful and timely
development and we are now in the secretariat working closely with the interim
government to try to determine dates and the timings of these meetings," he
added. The joint working group is chaired by the High Commissioner of Papua
New Guinea to Fiji, Peter Eafeare and comprised heads of Forum Island Member
countries that have diplomatic missions in Suva.
