Jordan's new ambassador to Iraq has been in Baghdad to take up his post,
local daily The Jordan Times reported today. Nayef Zeidan, the newly
appointed ambassador, presented his credentials to Iraqi President Jalal
Talabani yesterday; Jordanian Foreign Minister Salah Bashir was quoted as
announcing. President Talabani expressed his appreciation for Jordan's "
important step," which will boost cooperation between the two neighboring
countries, according to Bashir. Iraqi Ambassador to Jordan Saad Hayyani has
confirmed the appointment of Jordan, saying that this comes as an outcome of
Jordanian King Abdullah's efforts to boost relations between the two
countries. "We hope that this step will boost the already strong ties between
our two countries in various fields of cooperation even further," he said
yesterday. "The appointment of Jordan, the UAE and the Arab League
ambassadors to Iraq carries a message to the Arab countries that situation in
Iraq is secure and stable," Hayyani stressed. Jordan had kept its embassy in
Baghdad open and run by a charge d'affaires after an attack on the embassy in
2003 that left 14 people killed. Jordan reportedly named an ambassador to
Iraq three years ago but the diplomat failed to take up his post due to lack of
security protection.
