Four moderate earthquakes have been monitored in Peru within about 13
hours, with no report of casualties or damage, the Geophysics Institute of Peru
(IGP) said yesterday. Three of the quakes were felt in Lima, while the other
one shook the city of Trujillo in northwest Peru, the IGP reported. The first
tremor was registered on Sunday at 22:38 local time (0338 GTM, yesterday), with
a magnitude of 3.9 on the Richter scale. Its epicenter is about 40km to the east
of Lima. The second one, measuring 4 magnitude, occurred at the same place at
04:00 local time (0900 GMT) yesterday. The third one, also of 4 magnitude,
shook the city of San Vicente de Calete on the southern coast at 11:00 local
time (1600 GMT). The city of Trujillo was jolted by a quake of 4.2 magnitude at
12:05 local time (1705 GMT). Peru, a quake-prone country, is located at the
circum-Pacific seismic belt, also known as the Pacific Ring of Fire. In 2007,
a 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck southern Peru, killing 594 people and
destroyed more than 65,000 houses.
