Fiji's Interim Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama has written to
political parties requesting a meeting next week and expressing his desire to
conduct an election as soon as practicable, Fiji Times daily reported
today. He told political leaders the agenda would be open and flexible but
within the overall objective to move toward constitutional and democratic
governance. Bainimarama said the purpose of the meeting was to make a head
start on the agenda and terms of reference of the presidential political
dialogue forum. Political parties have been given until tomorrow to respond
to the invitation. The leader of the deposed ruling party Laisenia Qarase has
accepted the invitation. The Fiji Labour Party management board will meet
tomorrow before confirming its participation. The other major parties,
National Federation and United People' s Party, are also certain to confirm
their participation. Each party has been invited to have two
representatives. Bainimarama wanted the political leaders to back an
electoral reform ahead of the next election.
