South Korean Air is initiating an additional direct flight from Nepali
capital Kathmandu to Seoul every Monday to serve Nepali workers selected for
employment in South Korea under its Employment Permit System (EPS). According
to today's The Kathmandu Post, the South Korean carrier already operates a
direct flight every Thursday. Universal Tours and Travels, the authorized
agency handling the travel arrangements of Nepali workers selected under the
EPS, said the extra Monday flight was started mainly for their benefit. "The
direct flight brings Nepali workers to their destination conveniently on Monday
so that they can be received by their employers yesterday as per their
schedule," said an official of the agency. According to the daily, a total of
6,586 Nepali job seekers have been listed in the job roster of the Human
Resource Department of South Korea for potential recruitment under the EPS, a
system which allows South Korean firms to hire foreign workers at the same wages
as local staff. Krishna Chapagain, a staffer at the EPS-Nepal office, said
205 Nepali workers are scheduled to fly directly to the South Korean capital on
Monday. "Most of the workers who have received the labor contracts have
signed them," he said. He said 621 candidates, most of them selected to work
in manufacturing firms, had left for S.Korea as of last Monday. One of the
largest Asian economies, South Korea offers Nepali job seekers opportunities to
work in five sectors -- agriculture, manufacturing, service, fishery and
construction. Nepal signed a Memorandum of Understanding with South Korea
last year to send Nepali blue-collar workers under the EPS.
