Indonesia is to execute three Islamic militants for Bali bombing in
November 2002, spokesman of the Attorney General Office Jasman Pandjaitan
announced in Jakarta today. The spokesman said that all the legal effort by
Ali Gufron alias Muklas, Amrozi, and Imam Samudra alias Abdul Azis, to reduceor
delete their punishment were aborted. In 2004, the country's supreme court
declared the bombers guilty on the Bali blasts that claimed 202 lives, most of
them Australian holiday-makers. "The plan for the dead execution on Amrozi,
Imam Samudra and Muklas will be implemented in November," Pandjaitan told a
press briefing at his office here. The execution would be carried out by
firing team in Nusa Kambangan prison compound in Central Java. But, he declined
to elaborate the date. "The execution for the death convicted, Imam Samudra
and his friends, will take place in Nusakambangan, Cilacap District, by the
execution squad," said Pandjaitan. The three men have several time launched
appeals, including the recent one on the method of the execution, which was
rejected by the constitutional court, and another one which is planned to be
launched next week against the decision of the Supreme Court in 2004 that they
were guilty on the bombings. Preparation for the execution has been made by
the Central Java provincial police. Pressure to execute the three bombers has
been mounted recently by the family members of the victims.
