Peru, Spain sign Strategic Partner Agreement

Peru and Spain yesterday signed the Strategic Partner Agreement, which
will boost political, social, cultural and economic cooperation between the two
countries, and help Peru sign a commercial agreement with the European Union
(EU). Peruvian President Alan Garcia and visiting Spanish King Juan Carlos
attended the signature ceremony at the Government Palace in Lima. Under this
agreement, Peru becomes Spain's sixth strategic partner in Lain America,
following Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Colombia. The agreement also
tends to boost the reciprocal investment of both countries and the access of
Peruvian products to the EU, according to the authorities. Moreover, both
countries agreed to prevent illegal immigration, promote human rights and the
fight against drug trafficking and terrorism. Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia
arrived in Peru on Sunday for a two-day official visit, after which they will
travel to El Salvador to attend the 18th Ibero American Summit.
