Two soldiers and seven residents were injured when suspected insurgents
detonated a bomb hidden in front of a government office in Thailand's
violence-striken far southern province of Yala this morning, according to the
Thai News Agency. The Yala police department bomb squad and other security
personnel rushed to the scene after an apparently home-made device exploded at
the entrance gate of the Yala Highways Department. Witnesses said a male
teenager was identified as the bombing suspect who placed the explosive device
at the gate. Police believe that at least two people were involved, and the
bomb was detonated by mobile phone. All the wounded and injured were sent to
a local hospital for emergency treatment. Insurgent violence in Thailand's
three southernmost provinces -- Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani -- have killed over
3,500 people in the region since its resurrection in January 2004.
