Mexican President Felipe Calderon said yesterday that he will work harder
to discipline civil servants to curb their misconducts. The president swore
that he never hesitates and will not hesitate to punish any civil servant who,
instead of serving the public, betrayed his countrymen. Calderon made the
remarks after the federal attorney general's office (PGR) detained two
high-ranking officials for allegedly involving in drug trafficking. Fernando
Rivera Hernandez and Miguel Colorado Gonzales, both from the assistant attorney
general's office for specialized investigation of organized crime (SIEDO), were
said to have connection with the Beltran Leyva brothers' criminal
organization. The criminal group was suspected to have offered the two
officials a monthly pay between 150,000 to 450, US$000 in exchange for
classified information concerning operations against drug trafficking. The
drug cartel might have infiltrated the Mexican law unit a long time ago, said
Calderon. Both ex-officials are now being held in the Puente Grande maximum
security prison in the central-western state of JalisCo Another three policemen
from the Federal Investigation Agency (AFI) were also detained for links with he
same criminal gang.
