Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said in Canberra today that Australia
remained confident its ties with the United States will prosper and develop
under the leadership of Barack Obama. Rudd told the parliament the world
would continue to look to the US to provide global leadership on many challenges
facing nations. "When Senator Obama is sworn in as the president of the
United States on the 20th of January next year, the Australian government will
be ready to work closely with the new administration to build on the strong
foundation that already exists," he said. "The Australian government looks
forward to building a partnership with the new administration, which will
reinforce the vital and natural ties that have always existed between Australia
and the United States," he said. But he noted that in the months ahead,
Australia looked forward to working closely with President Bush and his
administration on many immediate challenges, most critically the global
financial crisis, where the president's continuing leadership remains
important.
