An Israeli tank shell killed a Hamas militant in eastern Gaza city this
morning, Hamas and medical sources said. Hamas said that Mohammed al-Ar'ir,
19, was killed when a tank shell targeted him near Nahal Oz crossing point. In a
message sent to journalists' mobiles, the armed wing of Hamas said the youth was
on a "Jihad mission," but did not elaborate. Medical sources said the youth
was dead when taken to al-Shifa hospital in Gaza with shrapnel in most of his
body at 7:45 a.m. ( 0545 GMT). The death of al-Ar'ir brings the death toll to
15 militants killed since a new wave of violence hit the Hamas-controlled
territory on Nov. 4. During this period, armed Palestinian groups resumed rocket
attacks into Israeli border towns to retaliate a series of Israeli army
operations. The latest violence rocked the five-month-old Egyptian-brokered
ceasefire. Meanwhile, Israel kept the crossing points to Gaza Strip closed
for the 16th successive day.
