Indonesia's anti-corruption watchdog seizes US$15.6 bln from state officials

Indonesia Anti-Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) said that it has
seized US$15.6 million state assets from public officials during the 2007- 2008
period, according to a newspaper today. Indonesia has been combating
corruption which hampered its efforts in attracting foreign
investment. Chairman of the commission Antasari Azhar was quoted by the
Jakarta Post as saying that all the money has been returned to the
state. Antasari said besides tracing the wealth of public officials, the
commission was also trying to improve the system of governance to prevent
officials from abusing their power. Scores of people, from officials to
former ministers and central bank governors, have been jailed and undergone
trials for graft.
