Strong earthquake hits remote areas off New Zealand North Island

A strong earthquake measuring 6. 0 on the Richter scale struck the remote
Kermadec Islands, north of New Zealand' North Island today, according to the US
Geological Survey. The quake hit the New Zealand territory, 990 km north east
of Auckland city at 01:36 p.m. local time (0036 GMT) at a depth of 35 km. No
casualties or damages were reported. The islands, which are often rocked by
severe quakes, have no permanent population.
