Plassnik, Rice call for more women in UN peacekeeping missions

Austrian Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik and US Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice called for more women's participation in UN peacekeeping
missions, the Austrian Foreign Ministry said yesterday. In a joint letter to
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Plassnik noted that even today, it is still
not common for women to participate actively and equally in international
peacekeeping missions. During Austria's EU presidency in 2006, Plassnik
prepared a review catalog to ensure more consideration for women to get involved
in peacekeeping missions. He hoped that Ban would apply their successful model
in UN peacekeeping missions. Eight women have already been appointed to
leading positions by Ban in conflict regions since May 2007, including UN Legal
Chief Patricia O'Brien and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem
Pillay.
